Original HMS Victory Found!

The wreck of the HMS Victory, a British warship that was the forerunner to Nelson’s famous flagship, has been found in the English Channel. The actual wreck is in international waters, and normally would open for salvage and exploration. But, because this is a warship wreck, under international law, it belongs to the British government, and so the exploration company, Odyssey Marine Exploration, will need to get permission from the British to explore the wreck further.

This week’s scenario: The Big Freeze, Part II

After skipping 3 weeks because of scheduling and the holidays, and canceling 2 weeks due to weather, we will finally be back this week with this Big Freeze scenario:

This will be a standard, 40pt, multi-round tournament. Players can bring a 40pt fleet, using pieces from any nationality or set, along with 8 gold coins worth 15 gold. Events and Unique Treasures are allowed. There will be one special rule: each time a ship or crew is given an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, 2 Iceberg terrain pieces are placed anywhere in the play area, but not closer than L from any ship, terrain or island.

The winners of the night will be the player with the most total gold after all rounds, and the player who knocked off the most masts/sank the most ships.

I hope to post event results on Friday.

Is This a Good Sign for Pirates?

It was announced recently over on TabletopGamingNews that Topps has withdrawn the sale offer for the BattleTech and Shadowrun intelectual properties (IPs). What does this mean for Pirates?

Cool Pirate Icon Set

Arr!

One of my Pirates players sent me a link to the 50 Most Beautiful Icon Sets Created in 2008 (according to Noupe.com). # 28 on the list was a very cool set of Pirate themed icons.

I liked them so much, I’ve started using them in my desktop theme (along with an appropriate old-world style sailing chart for a background.) It still needs a few tweaks, but I’ll try to posts pictures once I get everything setup.

I’m back, and don’t miss Crusoe tonight

Arr everyone,

Sorry for the blog going dark for the past 2 weeks. I had a very big freelance project that took up most of my freetime…including the time that I would use to write blog posts. But, I’m back now, and new posts will start next week.

Also, although it’s not Pirates, don’t miss Crusoe tonight on NBC. From the previews, it looks like some swashbuckling fun, even if it’s not pirates…

Savage Shores Checlist has been leaked

Savage Shores ChecklistI found this while scouring the Pirates boards over the weekend.

I don’t have a lot of time to go over this thoroughly (big freelance project in the works), but here are a couple of things I noticed:

  • This is a small set. It looks like they took a normal sized set and split into 2 parts: Savage Shores and Return to Savage Shores (due out next year). While this will make it easier to collect, I think some players are going to be upset about the size of the set and the lack of a variety of new ships.
  • No new equipment in this set.
  • it looks like the 2 10-masted ships are both Mercenary (Celtic Fury with Eileen Brigid O’Brian and Shui Xian with Shap’ng Tsai)
  • There are 2 new generic crew: Navigators and Cargo Masters. But, while the big 6 nationalities (American, Cursed, Pirate, English, Spanish, France) get Navigators, only the Americans get Cargo Masters.
  • American Cursed ans Spain get something called Native Canoes.
  • The English get a ship called the Metal Dragon, which some players are saying could be an English sub. I think it’s too cheap for a sub, but it might be an English Turbine ship.

I’m waiting for WizKids to start doing official sneak peeks, so that we can find out what some of this new stuff is. Stay tuned!

It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arr!

This be the happiest day to be a Pirate! Arr! Check out the movin’ picture below!

Arr! Here be the lyrics:

Most days are like all of the others,
Go to work, come back home, watch TV,
But, brother, if I had me druthers,
I’d chuck it and head out to sea,

For I dream of the skull and the crossbones,
I dream of the great day to come,
When I dump the mundane for the Old Spanish Main
And trade me computer for rum! ARRR!

T’ me,
Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It’s “Talk Like A Pirate” Day!
When laptops are benches God gave us fer wenches,
And a sail ain’t a low price ta pay!
When timbers are shivered and lillies are livered
And every last buckle is swashed,
We’ll abandon our cars for a shipfull of ARRRs
And pound back the grog till we’re sloshed! Yo ho….

Don’t pick up yer phone and say “Hello,
Our ten-o-clock meeting’s delayed”,
Ye scrunch up yer face and ye bellow,
“AVAST! Ye’ve been bleedin’ BELAYED!”

Ye can’t keep this fun to yerself, I bet,
So sing “Aye!” “ARRR!” “Ayy!” every man!
We ain’t got much grasp of the alphabet,
But a damn good retirement plan!

T’ me,
Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It’s “Talk Like A Pirate” Day!
Whatever’s in fashion is in for a thrashin’
And bein’ polite is passe!
When it’s ev’ry man’s duty to grab his proud beauty
And let out a hearty YO HO!
And if this offends you, hold y’r breath as we sends you
Ta Davy Jones’ Locker ya go! Yo ho….

We’ll tell every banker “Heave to and weigh anchor!”
Buy latte with pieces of eight
We’ll fight to be chosen as cap’n or bosun
The loser, o’ course, is worst mate!

When we hoist Jolly Roger, the landlubbers dodge ‘er,
We fill ‘em with loathing and fear,
We’ll plunder and pillage each city and village,
Or at least clean out Wal-Mart of beer!

There ain’t no computin’ or morning commutin’,
No “Parking Lot Full” signs for me,
No lawns ta be mowin’ or bills to be owin’,
I’m knowin’ the pull of the sea.

The fresh salty brace of the wind on my face
Through hurricane, sunshine or squalls,
I’m keepin’ my eyes on the distant horizon,
Verizon can hold all my calls!

To wear a red coat full o’ buckles,
To earn a few duelling scars,
Well, at least we can get a few chuckles
By filling the office with ARRRs!

And maybe we’ll never get closer,
Than watchin’ ‘em on the big screen,
So here’s to old Errol and Depp as Jack Sparrow,
And every damn one in between!

T’ me,
Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It’s “Talk Like A Pirate” Day!
That time in September when sea dogs remember
That grown-ups still know how ta play!
When wenches are curvy and dogs are all scurvy
And a soft-wear patch covers your eye,
Ta hell with our jobs, for one day we’re all swabs
And buccaneers all till we die!

So hoist up the mainsils and shut down your brain cells,
They only would get in the way,
Avast there, me hearty, we’re havin’ a party,
It’s “Talk… Like… A Pirate” Day!

Here’ s something else I found:

Polaris, an English Double Catamaran

Several of the Rise of the Fiends Limited Edition ship have been showing up in the Pirates of the Cursed Sea Treasure Chest, including the Grinder (turbine), Polaris (double catamaran), Terrox (octopus), and the USS Mercury (windcatcher). I’m going to be reviewing each one in the next few weeks.

I talked about the Grinder a few weeks ago. This time, let’s look at the Polaris. Continue Reading »
