One of the more interesting additions that Fire & Steel brings to Pirates of the Cursed Seas is Equipment. These pieces, costing just 1pt each, work a bit like Unique Treasures, but you can install them onto a ship at the beginning of the game instead of putting them into the treasure pool (where an opponent could get them).

There are 7 pieces of Equipment in the new set, including Grapple Shot, Smokepot Shot, Chain Shot, Stinkpot Shot, Exploding Shot, Double Shot, and the delightful Grape Shot. Only Grape Shot has been revealed so far:

Grape Shot: Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons can shoot a grape shot. Declare which cannon will shoot the grape shot before rolling the d6. If it hits, eliminate a crew instead of a mast. If the cannon roll is a 1, remove Grape Shot from the game.

So, for 1 point, you get a chance to kill a crew instead of a mast. The downside is that there is a 1 in 6 chance that you’ll lose Grape Shot on your first Shoot action. So, you might want to put Grape Shot onto a ship with a reroller or reroll ability, just in case.

Three of the Equipments look like they mimic the Smokepot, Stinkpot and Chainshot Specialists, respectfully. Although the specific details have not been revealed yet, I’m hopeful that Equipment won’t be restricted to S range, like the Specialists. Using Stinkpot Shot against an opponent L away (or 2L away if your ship has that “Double the Range of this ship’s cannons” ability) would be really cool. But, we’ll have to wait until next week to see the full descriptions of these pieces.
